The Covid-19 situation is still very volatile and dynamic because the virus continues to mutate. She
explains that the BA.4 and BA.5 variants were first detected in South Africa in January and February 2022.

“BA.4 and BA.5 became the dominant variants in South Africa in May 2022 and epidemiological indicators suggests that these two variants are responsible for the spike in cases observed in the country between April and May 2022,” Erlina pointed out.

Erlina speculated the higher transmissibility of BA.4 and BA.5 cases may be due to their ability to evade immune system acquired from previous infections and/or vaccinations.
