House Passes Mother and Child Welfare Law


Jakarta, IO – The House of Representatives (DPR) enacted the Mother and Child Welfare in the First 1,000 Days of Life on Tuesday (4/6).

It was passed in the House’s 19th plenary session of the 2023-2024 fifth legislative session chaired by House Speaker Puan Maharani, per Katadata, Wed (5/6).

One of the provisions grants working mothers maternity leave of at least three months up to a maximum of six months if there are special conditions that warrant this, subject to doctor’s formal recommendation, says House Committee VIII deputy chair Diah Pitaloka. The previous rule only mandated a maximum of three-month leave.

Other major provision concerns two-day paternity leave for husbands to accompany their wives in labor and can be extended by three additional days subject to employer’s approval.

Husbands who accompany wives who experience miscarriages are entitled to 2 days of leave.

It also stipulates that the responsibilities of mothers, fathers and families in the first 1,000 days of life is under the responsibilities of the central government and regional administrations from planning, monitoring to evaluation. (un)
