Using Japanese tissue and special adhesive glue, PDS HB Jassin encapsulation team needed at least 30 minutes for the paper
to be considered strong enough to be archived back with the other collections.

The variation of the time required will depend on the condition of the paper to be encapsulated. The more weathered and
older the paper, the longer it will take.

In dealing with manuscripts that preceded Indonesia’s independence, Hanan, one of the restoration staff at PDS HB Jassin, said patience is key during the encapsulation process. According to him, this process requires great dedication because it must be done very carefully and with focus on details.

“So, encapsulation takes precedence, in addition to the most sought-after manuscripts but there are parts that are torn, manuscripts that are already fragile and the paper is starting to thin out,” said Hanan.

In addition to the encapsulation process that requires precision, it cannot be done arbitrarily. The team must wear full clothes such as white coats to gloves like chemists in a laboratory. This will prevent dust from ruining the precious manuscripts that have been kept for a long time. (un)
