Gunfight erupts between KKB and joint security forces at Papua’s Bilorai Airport

Jakarta, IO – Papuan Armed Criminal Group (KKB) attacked joint TNI-Polri personnel at Bilorai Airport, Sugapa district, Intan Jaya regency on Tuesday (7/3).

Papua Police spokesperson Ignatius Benny Ady Prabowo said the security disturbance started around 7.55am WIT. At that time, the PK-SNG-registered Smart Aviation aircraft with cargo arrived at Bilorai Airport from Mimika regency.

“While the cargo was being unloaded, five shots were heard. People scrambled for protection at the Airport Police office,” he said, reported by CNN Indonesia, Wednesday (8/3).

Benny said at 8.20am WIT there was also a Daby Air aircraft requesting permission to land at Bilorai Airport. However, they were directed to return to Nabire because the situation was not conducive. Security personnel are still exchanging fire with the separatist fighters.

“We strongly suspected this attack was carried out by the Armed Criminal Group of Kodap VIII Intan Jaya led by Apen Kobogau and Apertinus Kobogau,” said Intan Jaya Police chief Afrizal Asri who ordered all flights to the airport to be suspended if the security situation remains volatile.

“We believed the group wants to disrupt activities at the airport, but we will investigate this matter further,” he said. (at)
