Greater Jakarta shaken by earthquake with epicentre in southwest of Cianjur

Jakarta, IO – An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.6 shook Cianjur, West Java at 13:21 p.m. WIB, Monday (21/11). The strong shaking was felt as far as Greater Jakarta, according to information from the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG).

BMKG said that the earthquake epicentre was 10-kilometre deep, precisely on 6.84 South Latitude, 107.05 East Longitude southwest of Cianjur.

However, BMKG assured the public that the earthquake did not have the potential to cause a tsunami.

Based on information from the National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas), seven houses were heavily damaged in Cianjur, two in Bogor, as well as a number of other damages to public facilities. In addition, a number of residents were reported to be injured.

In a number of areas affected by the earthquake shocks such as Sukabumi, Bandung, Cianjur, Jakarta, Depok and Bekasi, panicked residents fled their homes and buildings in a bid to seek safety. (un)
