Jakarta, IO – Coordinating Maritime Affairs and Investment Minister Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan proposed a new regulation regarding entry to Borobudur Temple. The proposals include restricting visitors number and increasing tariffs for tourists wishing to go up to the stupa of the temple.

Luhut said this proposal was based on various considerations, namely vulnerability and threats of wear, climate change, volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, including vandalism. The proposal will be submitted to and decided by President Joko Widodo next week.

“I heard a lot of public input today relating to the discourse of tariff increase local tourists. Therefore, I will ask the relevant parties to immediately review again so that the tariff can be lowered. I thank all of you for your great attention to this cultural heritage of our national pride,” said Luhut in a written statement received by the Independent Observe, Monday (6/6).

He explained that the planned rate hike was US$100 for foreign tourists and Rp5,000 for local tourists and students, while those entering the temple complex would still pay Rp50,000 but to go up the central dome of the temple itself one would need to fork out Rp750,000 per person.
