Jakarta, IO – The government managed to rescue 20 Indonesian citizens who were conned to work illegally in Myawaddy, Myanmar, but were then held captive and even tortured.
According to Foreign Ministry on Monday (7/5), the rescue operation was carried out in collaboration with the Indonesian Embassy in Yangon and local networks that have access to Myawaddy. They were safely transported to the Thai border in two batches on Friday (5/5) and Saturday (6/5).
After that, the Indonesian Embassy in Bangkok formed a team who assisted their return to Indonesia. The repatriation process was carried out in coordination with the Indonesian Embassy in Bangkok and the Thai authorities.

They ended up in Myanmar after being deceived by human traffickers who offered them jobs with lucrative pays. (un)
