IO – The 2020 Regional Elections, which will be held simultaneously on 9 December, are going to be different from previous Regional Elections. This time, the Elections require unique strategies that will allow organizers to maintain strong adherence to health protocols during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
Functional Group (Golongan Karya – “Golkar”) Party General Chairman Airlangga Hartarto wants Candidate Pairs to campaign for the 2020 Regional Elections to promote the importance of a change of behavior during the new normal. “Our Elections are being held in the new normal situation. Naturally, we hope that campaigns for this Elections differ from those of previous Elections. In our meeting with the Elections Commission (Komisi Pemilihan Umum – “KPU”) and the Election Monitoring Agency (Badan Pengawas Pemilihan Umum – “Bawaslu”), the use of different media in campaigning was to convince the people of the importance of changing one’s behavior in the new normal,” he said after issuing directions in the “Socialization of Rules and Regulations Pertaining to the 2020 Simultaneous Regional Elections” held in Pullman Hotel, Jakarta, on 15 August 2020. This closed event was also attended by the Party’s Vice General Chairmen Aziz Syamsuddin and Ahmad Doli Kurnia, General Secretary Lodewijk F. Paulus, and General Treasurer Dito Ganinduto.
Airlangga stated that health devices used to maintain health protocols, such as hand sanitizers and masks, can also serve as campaign media. Furthermore, meetings during Regional Elections this year must also be held differently, using either of two methods: First, restricted physical meetings; second, online meetings. It is also possible to combine these two types of meeting by holding a restricted physical meeting that is broadcast online through Zoom or other online medium, and with other door-to-door activities. This is important for Golkar Party cadres, especially those who are gathered at the event in order to consolidate the Party.
Airlangga also mentioned that several regions have organized various activities for socializing the 2020 Regional Elections, “…such as competitions, including a photography competition in DKI, and a poem-declaiming competition and a TikTok competition in East Java. Some ladies even went so far as to initiate ‘Golkar Got Talent’. We are encouraging such creativity,” he said.
Golkar’s General Chairman Airlangga Hartarto set the victory target for the 2020 Regional Elections at 60% of votes in 270 regions. He instructs all levels and cadres of Golkar to remain solid: “This technical guidance is held to socialize the regulations for Regional Elections and other rules related to Golkar Party’s internal affairs, especially in gaining victories in the 270 regions we compete in. Our overall target is 60% of total votes,” he said. (dan)
