Jakarta, IO – Michelle Yeoh could not hide the joy and gratitude she felt when the was awarded the Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture, Musical, or Comedy Award in the 2023 Golden Globe thanks to her amazing, brilliant acting in the movie Everything Everywhere All at Once. In her category, Yeoh defeated four other nominees, Lesley Manville, Margot Robbie, Anya Taylor-Joy and Emma Thompson.

This is both Yeoh’s first nomination and first victory in the Golden Globe. Everything Everywhere All at Once itself had six Golden Globe 2023 nominations, including for Best Comedy, Best Director and Script for “the Daniels” (Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert), Best Supporting Actor for Ke Huy Quan, and Best Supporting Actress for Jamie Lee Curtis.

When she went on stage for her acceptance speech, Yeoh reveals her belief that hard work will never betray results. “In my forty years’ career in the film industry, I have always dreamed of this. It’s really a dream come true. Forty years. Not letting go of this. So just quickly, thank you, Hollywood Foreign Press, for giving me this honor,” she declared. “My role in Everything Everywhere All at Once is really a gift.”

Yeoh admitted that her victory made her recall her struggles when she entered the Hollywood creative industry: “It’s been an amazing journey and incredible fight to be here today, but I think it’s been worth it. I remember when I first came to Hollywood; it was a dream come true until I got here, because look at this face. I came here and was told, ‘You’re a minority,’ and I’m like, ‘No, that’s not possible.’ And then someone said to me in surprise, ‘You speak English!’” Yeoh giggled. “I mean, forget about them not knowing Korea, Japan, Malaysia, Asia, India. And then I said, ‘Yeah the flight here was about 13 hours long, so I learned!’”

Yeoh went on to express her appreciation for Everything Everywhere All at Once, a brave movie where she played the character of Evelyn Quan Wang, a middle-aged immigrant woman who fought courageously for the sake of her daughter. “I was given this gift of playing this woman who resonated so deeply with me and with so many people. Because at the end of the day, in whatever universe she was at, she was just fighting, fighting for love for her family,” she declared proudly.

Finally, she dedicated the award to all who fight the same battles that she did: “And this is for all the shoulders that I stand on, all who came before me who looks like me, and all who are going on this journey with me forward. So thank you for believing in us. Thank you,” she declared emotionally. (yas)
