Jakarta, IO – The Gerindra Party took firm action against its cadre M Syukri Zen who assaulted a woman, identified as J (31) while queueing at a gas station in Palembang, South Sumatra.

The party’s South Sumatra regional executive board chair Kartika Sandra Desi said the perpetrator was dismissed after the party ethics committee held a meeting following the incident. Shukri was judged to have committed a serious violation that warrants an expulsion from the party.

“In the meeting, we decided to fire the person concerned because he had committed a gross violation that tarnished the party’s reputation,” Kartika said, as reported by CNN Indonesia, Saturday (27/8).

The Gerindra Party will soon recall Syukri who is currently member of the Palembang City Legislative Council (DPRD).

“We regret the incident and would like to express our since apologies to the victim,” said Kartika.

The Palembang Police Department has named Shukri as a suspect in the case. The decision was made after the authorities obtained a CCTV footage and witness and victim statements. (un)
