Jakarta, IO – As Jakarta continues its journey toward becoming a “global smart city”, one of its efforts is employing geospatial technology to optimize urban planning and design. Sulistyo, Head of Professional Services at Esri Indonesia, highlighted this during his presentation at the “Investing in Jakarta’s Urban Redevelopment” discussion, at the Jakarta Investment Forum (JIF) Summit 2024, organized by the Jakarta Provincial Government.
“Geographic Information System (GIS) technology allows us to visualize multiple layers of data through digital maps. This technology enables investors, corporations, and governments to engage in discussions that were previously impossible,” said Sulistyo at the event on Friday, September 6.
He explained that data on property, infrastructure access, and population demographics can now be precisely mapped, to reveal trends that were once difficult to identify.
The main JIF 2024 discussion focused on using geospatial technology to analyze property and location data. The forum aims to strengthen Jakarta’s position as a global smart city and a world trade hub, as it shifts from being the nation’s capital. The theme “Investing in Jakarta’s Urban Redevelopment” focuses on enhancing existing investment structures and identifying new collaborative opportunities.
Sulistyo emphasized the importance of geospatial-based predictive analysis. “With spatial data, maps are no longer just static visualization tools: they become predictive instruments, capable of simulating both the challenges and the potential success of investment projects,” he explained.
As a leading GIS technology provider, Esri Indonesia is pivotal in supporting data-driven decision-making. Interactive GIS tools enable urban planners and government officials to explore demographic, economic, traffic, and infrastructure data at both macro and micro levels, down to the neighborhood details.

“Jakarta requires careful planning in terms of occupancy, mobility, and infrastructure. With GIS, city officials and planners can access comprehensive, detailed data to ensure accurate decision-making,” said Sulistyo.
He further added that geospatial solutions have evolved into strategic tools for decision-making.
“Imagine Jakarta with precisely-designed infrastructure, resource allocation based on value, and the ability to anticipate development impacts before they happen. This is no longer an fantasy future, but will soon be a reality, with today’s geospatial data,” he concluded. (des/ast)
