Jakarta, IO – The decision was made at the 216th UNESCO Executive Council Session in Paris, France, Wednesday (24/5).

Maros-Pangkep is the 7th global geopark in Indonesia. This year, there are three other geoparks in Indonesia to make it to the list - Ijen, Merangin-Jambi and Raja Ampat - bringing the total number to 10, reported Detik, Thursday (25/4).

Maros-Pangkep is included along with 17 other geoparks around the world. They are shortlisted from a total of 195 geoparks from 48 countries.

This is of course a prideful moment for Indonesia. The list is a prestigious recognition given to outstanding geological sites for their unique landscapes. Maros Pangkep is known for its outstanding geological elements – including the archaeological, ecological and cultural values contained therein. This designation will certainly motivate the local community to take part in protecting and preserving the natural heritage.
