Former Maritime Affairs & Fisheries Minister Sarwono Kusumaatmadja dies aged 79

Jakarta, IO – Sarwono Kusumaatmadja, minister of maritime affairs and fisheries during the Abdurrahman “Gus Dur” Wahid administration passed away in Penang, Malaysia at the age of 79 on Friday (26/5).

Sarwono was born on July 24, 1943. He attained his bachelor’s degree from Bandung Institute of Technology in 1974.

Before joining Gus Dur administration, he served as minister of state for administrative reform in the fifth Development Cabinet (1988-1993) during the Suharto (New Order) administration.

He then appointed as minister of state for environmental affairs at the sixth Development Cabinet (1993-1998).

Outside the executive branch, Sarwono is also served as a member of the House of Representatives (DPR) from 1971-1988 and secretary general of Golkar Party central executive board (1983-1988). He was the first civilian to lead the party bearing the banyan tree emblem. (un)
