Jakarta Traffic Police Director Senior Commissioner Latif Usman said the victim’s negligence could put other people’s life in danger.

Police later issued an order to stop the investigation, effectively closing the case. “First, the case has expired, and there was not enough evidence [that the car driver was negligent],” said Latif.

This decision sparked outcry. Member of UI Student Executive Body (BEM) criticized the handling of the case.

National Police Commission (Kompolnas) commissioner Poengky Indarti suspected the police was siding with the driver, reported Kompas.

“This case raises a lot of questions from the victim’s family and the public. Moreover, the driver involved is a retired National Police officer, giving rise to suspicions of the neutrality of the police in the investigation,” said Poengky.

As a result of the public pressure, Jakarta Police Chief Inspector General Pol Fadil Imran formed a joint fact-finding team (TGPF) to investigate the case, reported Merdeka. He also said there would be an external team involving experts in the field of transportation safety, legal and automotive.

“The facts will be reviewed, hopefully we can deliver a sense of justice and legal certainty in this case,” said Fadil. (un)
