Jakarta, IO – Jakarta’s transportation has been developing at a rapid pace but this does not make traditional mode of transportation perishes.
Eretan (a bamboo raft pulled by a rope from the other side of the river) in Kampung Sawah, Cilincing, has existed for decades and is still being used by the local residents to cross the river. Dubbed “getek boat”, motorcyclist prefer to use them because of the shorter distance and time it needs for them to cross to the other side compared to using the circuitous route.

Pak Amin, 68, one of the getek boat operators, has been in the business for 12 years. In a day, he can earn Rp150,000 per crossing, working from 11am to 7pm. The fare is Rp1,000 to Rp2,000. As Jakarta becomes increasingly congested, the boat provide an effective and efficient solution for motorcyclists while create jobs for local residents. (IO/Albrianso Wayapen)
