Jakarta, IO – People of Sibuntulung village, Muara Kaman district, Kutai Kartanegara regency, East Kalimantan have started preparation for the Erau Adat Benua Tuha tradition, an annual even that takes place every July or September.
The tradition has been performed for generations since the era of Kutai Kartanegara Kingdom. At that time, it was part of the custom to report crop yields to the sultanate, according to TribunKaltim, Tuesday (30/5).
Sabintulung village chief Arta said the ritual began from the village but has now been held in Kota Raja. “The progress for the preparations has been 25 percent, the committee has been formed,” said Arta.
Benua Tuha means ‘the oldest place’. The ritual is liven up by feast and dance, usually lasting for 7 days and 7 nights. Arta said the purpose is to offer food to the spirits of the kings and ancestors of the Kutai Kingdom.
The festival is one of the most eagerly awaited events by Kutai Kartanegara residents. Thousands of residents gathered to watch the ritual which opens with dance performance, depicts the daily life of the kings and the people of Kutai in the past during the heyday of the kingdom. (un)
