Entering Indonesia without passport, 23 Chinese citizens arrested in Surakarta

Jakarta, IO – Surakarta Immigration Office arrested 23 Chinese nationals, including one Taiwanese, who did not have passports or travel documents after the police received complaints from the public about their disruptive behavior at Wisma Rania, Gajahan village, Colomadu district, Karanganyar.

Central Java Immigration chief Wishnu Daru Fajar said according to Article 71b of Law 6/2011 on immigration, every foreigner who enters Indonesian territory is required to show travel documents when requested by an immigration officer.

“Currently they are detained at Surakarta Immigration detention center for further questioning,” Wishnu said.

Nevertheless, Wisnu could not confirm the veracity of their statement. The investigation is ongoing through coordination with the Chinese Embassy.

“We haven’t been able to confirm their specific activities because they are still being investigated. We acted quickly to prevent them from doing other things that could lead to violations of immigration regulations and other laws in this country,” he said.

Meanwhile, Ninik Sekar, a shopkeeper living next to Wisma Rania, admitted that they hardly leave the luxury rental house. They also behaved in secretive manner which made the locals became more suspicious. (bp)
