Dozens of Illegal Immigrants Detained in Sukabumi Waters


Jakarta, IO – A total of 28 foreign nationals suspected of violating immigration rules were detained after being found stranded on Muara Cikaso Beach, Buniasih village, Tegalbuleud district, Sukabumi regency on Saturday (29/6).

The Sukabumi Immigration Intelligence and Enforcement Team explained that the detainees consisted of four Thai, one Indian and 23 Bangladeshis. When arrested, there were also two Indonesians from West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) and Makassar who were suspected of being human smugglers.

Immigration Director of Supervision and Enforcement, Saffar Muhammad Godam, said the group planned to enter Australia illegally. They departed using speedboat from the waters off Cilacap, Central Java.

“However, as they were about to reach the destination, they were arrested by the Australian police and detained for around 11 days,” said Saffar, per CNN Indonesia, Fri (5/7).

The arrest happened after Sukabumi Police was alerted of the incident by local residents. After coordinating with the immigration office, the team headed to the location and detained the foreigners for further investigation. (un)
