IO – Young Indonesian national team player Derrick Michael Xzavierro is ready to accept the full NBA Academy scholarship offer to continue his studies at the Australian Institute of Sports (AIS) in Canberra, Australia.

“I am ready to accept the scholarship, even though I feel a mixture

of joy and sadness. It’s sad to say goodbye to Mama and family, “said Derrick. Derrick’s father is Cameroonian while his mother is an Indonesian woman of Batak blood.

Derrick received a notification letter from the NBA Global Academy signed by Eugene Park of the NBA Elite Basketball Talent Identification.

The bidding process has actually been going on for quite some time. “Last March, I received contact from them. My mother was also contacted. There is no registration process, they do the monitoring,” he said.

Derrick doesn’t know when he will leave for Australia. “If there is no Covid-19, actually I have been waiting for it. Currently, there are still some academic matters that must be resolved, “he said.

Derick will also undergo a preparatory period before studying. “There is a study preparation period, but for joint exercises, you can directly participate,” he said. “If the Indonesian national team needs me to defend the team, they will also allow it,” he continued.

Currently Derrick is still training with the Indonesian national team to face the FIBA Asia 2021 Qualification, which is planned to be held in November with a bubble system in one country.

Congratulations, Derrick, but remember this is just the opener, you have a long way to go to get to the NBA. But passionate and struggling. All Indonesian people support and pray for you. (rp)
