Jakarta, IO – Hundreds of on-demand motorcycle service (ojol) riders and couriers from all over Greater Jakarta held a demonstration at several location today, including Medan Merdeka Street, Central Jakarta, Thursday (29/8).
Igun Wicaksono, who heads one of the associations, Garda Indonesia, said one of the main demands was the tariff war between different companies.
According to him, this is detrimental to ojol riders and couriers.
“One of the main demands is that the tariff be regulated by the government to avoid a damaging tariff war,” said Igun, as per Kompas, Thu (29/8).
He added that the demonstration was held because ojol drivers feel increasingly “oppressed” by application companies.
“There is still no legal status with regard to online motorcycle taxis. We don’t have a legal standing before the law,” he said.
According to Igun, this is the reason why application companies can impose arbitrary policies on the drivers, who are their “partners”, with the government powerless to impose penalties.

Igun said that this is what triggered various protests and movements. He hopes that companies will listen to the complaints of the drivers and make further improvement especially with regard to fairer compensation.
“We hope the application companies will also respect the opinions of their partners as feedback and the government can also find more permanent solutions with regard to the ride-hailing transportation ecosystem,” said Igun. (un)
