Jakarta, IO – Representatives of the Dairi community in North Sumatra held a theatrical protest in front of the Supreme Court, Jakarta (6/8). They voiced their rejection against the presence of PT Dairi Prima Mineral which they said is threaten the safety of the environment and their livelihoods. They appealed to the Supreme Court to uphold justice and protect the rights of the local community affected by the mining operation.
This demonstration is part of years-long struggle. Previously, on February 14, they filed a cassation lawsuit after the Jakarta State Administrative High Court (PTTUN) ruled that the Environmental Permit held by PT Dairi Prima Mineral (PT DPM) was valid in a trial on November 22, 2023. The approval was issued by the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK) through Decree 854/2022 which stipulated that the company’s operation was environmentally feasible.

However, the PTTUN decision contradicts the Jakarta State Administrative Court (PTUN) decision which previously ruled that PT DPM’s Environmental Permit was invalid. On July 24, 2023, PTUN Jakarta ordered the Ministry of Environment and Forestry to revoke the permit because it was deemed to have violated the environmental feasibility requirements to protect the community and the surrounding environment.
