Chico, Ginting and Jojo suffer shocking defeat in Indonesia Open first round

Jakarta, IO – Indonesian men’s singles badminton player Anthony Sinisuka Ginting was defeated in the first round of the Indonesia Open 2024.

He was eliminated from the BWF Super 1000 series after losing to Japanese player, Kenta Nishimoto in a rubber game which took place at Istora Senayan, Jakarta, Tuesday (4/5).

At the start of the match, Ginting dominated the game and managed to win the first game with a 21-17 lead. However, things turned around in the second game. Ginting faced more aggressive Kenta. The game ended with a score of 11-21. Kenta continued to play well in the deciding game with better defense and counterattack, winning the match with the final score 8-21.

Commenting on his defeat, Ginting admitted that he was less focused even though both players have clashed several times before.

“First, I would like to express my gratitude for being able to play without injury, it was quite a tight match. Kenta also played well and was able to control the game in the second and third games. In addition, I made a lot of errors and couldn’t get out of the pressure,” said Ginting.

Meanwhile, Chico Aura Dwi Wardoyo was also eliminated in the first round after he was beaten by Thai player Kantaphon Wangcharoen in two straight games with the final score 16-21 and 9-21.

To complete the shock losses, another Indonesian ace player Jonatan “Jojo” Christie was bested by Malaysian opponent Leong Jun Hao with the score 13-21, 21-16 and 12-21. Indonesia Open is the last tournament before the Paris Olympics. This year, the prestigious BWF Super Series Premier tournament saw the participation of 241 players from 22 countries, including 30 from Indonesia.
