Catastrophic floods in Pakistan kill thousands of people and destroy a million homes

Jakarta, IO – Seasonal floods triggered by monsoon season in Pakistan have killed as many as 1,033 people and destroyed about one million homes. The death toll increased after rescue officers found 119 people in the last 24 hours.

The Pakistan National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA) said the floods also destroyed more than two million hectares of crops and washed away 3,451 kilometers (2,150 miles) of roads and 149 bridges.

In response, the government has declared a state of emergency and deployed the military to deal with what it dubbed an “epic-scale disaster.”

During his visit to the flood-stricken province of Balochistan, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif appealed for international assistance to tackle the disaster which has affected 33 million people.
