Jakarta, IO – Head of the National Counterterrorism Agency (BNPT) Boy Rafli Amar warned about potentially increasing radicalisation ahead of the 2024 elections, corroborating the statement by Presidential Chief of Staff Moeldoko.

“What Pak Moeldoko said was a ‘warning,” which aligns with the result of our research,” said Boy, reported CNN Indonesia on Thursday (27/10).

“In the run-up to 2024 elections, certain bad actors may make every effort, use any means, including those that violate the law,” he added.

He explained that the efforts could be in the form of acts of violence or other disturbances. However, he admitted that BNPT has made prevention efforts.

“We will heighten our prevention efforts to anticipate activities that can cause unrest, especially violent activities that may disrupt the elections,” he added.

Boy hopes that forms of violence such as hate speech, black campaigns, fake news and physical violence will not taint the upcoming elections.

Thus, he asked the public to remain vigilant and build a healthy democracy together, especially as the elections is just two years away. (un)
