Jakarta, IO – The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) noted that last year’s tectonic plate activities has significantly increased to a total of 10,000 times. In the last five years, they have increased not just in frequency but also strength.

“It used to be 6,000 times but since 2018 it has increased to an average of 10,000 times, meaning,” revealed BMKG head Dwikorita Karnawati, reported BeritaSatu, Thursday (2/3).

Earthquake activities are measured according to various variations in magnitude and depth, originating from plate subduction earthquakes and active faults. This is Indonesia is situated between three large plates, namely the Indo-Australian, Pacific and Eurasian.

Furthermore, the potential for earthquake was strengthened by the existence of six subduction zones in the form of 13 megathrust segments and 295 identified active fault segments. However, it is estimated that there are still many points that have yet been identified.
