Blast at coal mine in Sawahlunto kills 4, traps 6

Jakarta, IO – Four people were reported dead after a coal mine belonging to PT NAL in Talawi district, Sawahlunto city, West Sumatra, exploded on Friday (9/12).

National Police (Polri) spokesperson Inspector General Dedi Prasetyo said the Sawahlunto and West Sumatra Police are still investigating what caused the incident.

“There were 15 miners during the incident. Nine managed to escape, five injured, four died. The other six are still trapped,” said Dedi, reported Tempo. The blast happened at around 9 a.m. WIB when some of the miners had already entered the mine.

Police and rescue workers are still evacuating the miners trapped in a depth of 200 meters. Their conditions are still unknown. Meanwhile, methane could be smelled from the pit blocked by debris.

“Polri will assist the Sawahlunto and West Sumatra Police in the investigation. The main focus right now is to evacuate the trapped miners,” said Dedi. (rr)
