Jakarta, IO – Citizens spotted using umbrellas during a prolonged downpour in the HI Roundabout area, Jakarta, Friday (5/7). The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported that usually, the peak of the drought season in most of Indonesia occurs in July and August. However, in 2024, rain still falls frequently throughout our country.

Andri Ramdhani, Head of BMKG’s Public Meteorology Center, formally states that the combination of multiple factors that affect the weather is expected to cause medium to high intensity of rainfall in most parts of Indonesia on 5-11 July 2024, accompanied with thunder and strong winds. One of the reasons for the increased rainfall rate is the 3rd Phase Madden Julian Oscillation (MJO) atmospheric wave in the Indian Ocean, which causes excessive formation of rainclouds in Indonesia. Areas expected to suffer most from the effects of this phenomenon are Sumatra, Java, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Maluku Islands, and Papua.

Such high rainfall potential might cause disasters such as floods, landslides, and flash floods. Residents of hilly areas, highland areas, and river basin areas are especially advised to increase their awareness and to prepare precautionary steps.
