Jakarta, IDM – Australia’s leading university changed their exam policy and format after students were found cheating using artificial intelligence (AI) called ChatGPT from OpenAI, which can generate essays on almost any subjects in a clear and coherent manner, reported the Guardian, Tuesday (10/1).

The Group of Eight (Go8), consisting of the University of Sydney, University of New South Wales, Monash University, University of Melbourne, University of Western Australia, Australia National University, University of Queensland and University of Adelaide declared that they will proactively address the emerging challenge of AI by redesigning student assessments.

Go8 Deputy Chief Executive Dr Matthew Brown said, “Our universities have revised how they will run assessments in 2023, including supervised exams and greater use of pen and paper exams and tests.”

The advent of AI has posed a serious challenge to academic institutions as the technology is often abused. According to Brown, ChatGPT has raised concerns over its “negative impact on student learning” and potential for plagiarism.

Go8 member universities have also changed their academic integrity policies by stating that writing essays using AI violates the Student Code of Conduct and if caught, students will automatically fail the exams. Another solution is to improve assessment through fieldwork and oral presentations. (bp)
