Jakarta, IO – Democratic Party Central Executive Board chairman Agus “AHY” Harimurti Yudhoyono has underscored his position on the issue of postponing the 2024 general election. “From the beginning, I instructed all levels, particularly the Democratic Party faction in the House of Representatives, to strongly reject the idea of postponing the 2024 election,” said AHY when opening the 5th Technical Guidance of the Regional House of the Democratic Party Faction in Indonesia, Monday (3/14/2022).

AHY believes that the discourse of election postponement is a malicious conspiracy to hold onto power at all costs. In fact, it is meddling with the Constitution. He opined that other, similar, divisive tactics could surface if this discourse materializes. “If they manage to postpone the election, then what’s next? A three-term president? The president who won’t be directly elected by the people? President for life? We are doomed if that happens,” he said.

Thus, AHY instructed all Democratic Party cadres to stay alert and put their best efforts into protecting the people and maintaining the country’s democracy and the nation’s future from what he terms an evil conspiracy. “If the good people keep silent, it means we are letting this country fall into the abyss of destruction,” he said.

AHY mentioned the major demand contained in the 1998 reform was limiting presidents to two consecutive five-year terms in office. “It seems that there are people who want to overlook the significant history of this nation. Beware. A nation that doesn’t learn from its own history will be ruined and regress,” warned AHY. (des)
