Braga was growing very rapidly with the construction of various establishments, from boutiques, hotels, to nightlife entertainment. This gave rise to seedy reputation. Many foreign tourists came here to glance at Bandung girls renowned for their beauty. It became nicknamed the Flower City. There were even leaflets reading “Good tourists, don’t go to Bandung if you don’t bring your wife or leave your wife at home.”

Braga then gentrified without changing its original image. Old buildings still dot the area. For example, on the side facing Asia Afrika St., there is Gedung Merdeka, built in 1895. Formerly known as Societeit Concordia building, it was used as the venue for the 1955 Asian-African Conference.

Besides the architecture, tourists can also enjoy culinary delights at Braga Permai restaurant – Maison Bogerijen, a restaurant used to be frequented by high-class people in colonial times. Other than Dutch pastry, one can also savour diverse array of Indonesian foods and chocolates. (bp)
