  1. Mentawai Islands, West Sumatra

West Sumatra has approximately 400 surfing spots across the Mentawai Islands. No wonder that many call it a “hidden paradise” for world surfers. One of the best is on Sipora Island, which has made it into the 20 Best Surfing Spots in the World, according to CNN Travel. Sipora Island has fairly consistent waves up to 7 meters high which seems to form a tunnel that is very challenging for world surfers. The best time to surf is between April and October because that’s when the waves are at their highest.

  1. Tanjung Setia Beach, Lampung

Another beach listed in the 2022 World Surf League calendar is Tanjung Setia in Lampung. This international surfing event is called World Surf League Krui Pro 2022, which was held from June 11-17, 2022. Directly facing the Indian Ocean, during the peak of the surfing season (June to August), Tanjung Setia Beach waves can reach a height of between 6-7 meters, with very long wave intervals of up to 200 meters.

  1. Rote Island, East Nusa Tenggara

If East Java has G-Land, East Nusa Tenggara has T-Land. Yep, that’s the nickname for probably the best surf spot on Rote Island. The waves here can extend up to 300 meters, with a height up to 4.5 meters. Other renowned surfing spots on Rote Island are Nemberala Beach, Bo’a Beach, and Ndana Island.

  1. Nihiwatu Island, West Sumba

East Nusa Tenggara also has the Nihiwatu Island. The fusion of beautiful scenery, unique culture, and the warmth of the locals heightens the sensation of surfing on Nihiwatu Island. Even the island is nicknamed “Left God Waves” due to its towering and challenging waves. The best time to surf here is between July-August. (rr)
