3 sentenced to a total of 20 years behind bars in Rohingya trafficking case


Jakarta, IO – Three defendants in the smuggling 134 Rohingya refugees in Aceh Besar regency on December 10, 2023 were sentenced to a total of 20 years in prison.

The verdict was read out by judges at Jantho District Court on Wednesday (5/6), per Merdeka, Thu (6/6).

The judges found them guilty of smuggling people into Indonesian territory without valid travel documents and without going through the proper immigration checkpoints.

The ship’s captain, Mohammad Amin, a citizen of Myanmar, got 8 years. First mate Anisul Hoque, a Bangladeshi, got 6 years. Meanwhile, engine officer Habibul Basyar got 6 years.

Additionally, they were each told to pay a fine of Rp500 million, subsidiary to three months in prison. (un)
