Jakarta, IO – Bali Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA) released 18 green turtles (Chelonia mydas) saved from illegal trade on Thursday (18/5).

Jembrana Police on Monday (15/5) thwarted the smuggling attempt of the turtles on Mayor Sugianyar Street in the regency.

Bali BKSDA head Agus Budi Santosa said the turtles were immediately evacuated to floating net cages in Banyuwedang National Park in West Bali.

“There are quite a few turtles hence the need for special handling and facilities for their handling,” he said, reported Detik.

Based on examination results, 17 of them were females and 1 male. All the turtles were said to have suffered no injuries and were declared healthy. However, before being released, Bali BKSDA will tag them for monitoring purpose.
